Young Moms and Students Learn About Trust!

When We Prosper Together

Emerging from isolation and the influence of social media requires young people to relearn how to trust, connect, and build community. Over the past decade, ALMS has cultivated that work in Woodland, and our next goal is to help Woodland youth engage more fully with their broader county community and the opportunities it offers. We recently concluded an impactful eight-week ALMS Medical Trust Series with young women from West Sacramento, Davis, and Woodland. The program brought together two cohorts of 20 participants each for weekly sessions and achieved outstanding results: a 100% completion rate and 91% perfect attendance. Participants included young mothers and high school students between the ages of 17 and 25.

All Leaders Must Serve (ALMS) partnered with the Yolo Children’s Alliance (YCCA) to offer an experience that included the ALMS Trust Series with retired and medical professionals as mentors, multiple workshops – including financial literacy, job shadowing, and financial support for barriers such as transportation and childcare, to name a few.

The interactive soft skills training produced impressive results and inspired the mentors, instilling hope in these young women about their future paths.

“This training prepared me for the unexpected in the workforce, taught me things I did not already know, including how to impress employers,” shared Camia, a recent graduate from River City High School, exemplifying how the program positively influences individual career paths and community growth.

The training was offered at the Los Rios campus in West Sacramento, with funding provided by a Valley Vision grant called We Prosper Together. The pilot enabled program delivery and expanding opportunities for Yolo County participants.

Special thanks to Alicia Barlow, Interim Director at the Los Rios Community College campus in West Sacramento, for providing the training site and graduation facilities.
