We Call Her Sara Jane and She Needs Your Help
She’s Doing Her Best
Her name is Sara Jane, and she’s an incredibly bright young lady who was born into a family that doesn’t believe in her. We are calling her Sara Jane to protect her identity, although her story is repeated throughout many schools.
Sara Jane was born to two people, but only one decided to keep her. Sara Jane used to see the other parent occasionally as a young child, but after middle school, she decided he wasn’t worth seeing anymore.
Tired of the constant put-downs, reminders of every disability or failure she had (which shouldn’t be any at this point in her life), her parent tried to convince her that she was a loser and would never amount to anything. He would have her believe that there was no hope for her future outside of meager means, an emotional slave to someone who might take care of her or live with her grandmother for the rest of her life. He believed that Sara Jane would become the very person her mother had become.
Sadly enough, this is the message that too many of our young people receive. It’s no wonder that this often becomes their destiny.
But Sara Jane went through the ALMS Job Readiness program, received an internship through Dignity Health while attending her senior year, and now she has plans to attend Sierra College two days a week to become a radiologist.
Sara Jane called ALMS recently for a Letter of Recommendation, which we provided. We were reminded how radiant her smile was each day she came to session, and how positive her attitude was during session. Although she didn’t understand all the new words that she was introduced to, she had no problem asking questions and communicating her desire to learn. Sara Jane had a ‘beginners’ mindset’ that made her teachable, open, eager, and free of preconceptions.
But, she’s now looking for a part-time job that can help her pay for college. She has secured a job as a financial advisor, for which she is being trained. I’m not sure if this is a part of her journey, but ALMS wants to help her figure that out.
If you are willing to give Sara Jane thirty minutes of your time for her training session, reach out to ALMS and let us know so we can get you in contact with her. Your support can make a significant difference in her life. If you have a part-time job or scholarship that you would like to consider Sara Jane for, also reach out on our website at www.AllLeadersMustServe.org/contact or go to the link below.
